Although most pests pose more of a discomfort than actual harm much care must be taken to avoid disease.
One of the most famous cases of disease spreading through pests was the Black Death (Bubonic Plague). It was spread in the middle ages by rats carrying infected fleas. Because of the unsanitary conditions as well as lack of education, the plague was responsible for killing half of Europe., and to this day still claims lives although mostly in underdeveloped countries.
If you exhibit any bites, clean it as best as you can with soap, water, and hydrogen peroxide and then bandage it with antibacterial cream. Inspect the wound regularly to be sure that it is healing properly, if in doubt contact a doctor immediately!
After an infestation has been dealt with, clean the area believed to be exposed to the pest with a solution of water mixed with bleach to kill most of the germs remaining. Dispose of any carcasses/excrement.
